SurveyMonkey vs. Google Forms: is a paid survey tool worth it?

Google Forms is free with a Google account, takes up to 500,000 responses per form, and sends answers straight to Google Sheets. We make trulyform, a third option, so we’re not neutral. Every SurveyMonkey and Google Forms figure below comes from their own pricing and help pages, checked on the date shown and linked, and each section says when one of them is the better pick.

Should you choose SurveyMonkey or Google Forms?

When SurveyMonkey is the better choice

SurveyMonkey is worth paying for when surveys are a regular part of the job. Choose it if you need:

  • Analysis: statistical significance and AI analysis from Team Advantage, crosstabs on Team Premier
  • Roles, permissions, and shared brand assets for a team
  • Respondents to buy through SurveyMonkey Audience, sold separately
  • Payments and answer piping in surveys

The tradeoffs: the free plan stops at 10 questions per survey, and team plans start at 3 users billed yearly.

When Google Forms is the better choice

Google Forms is the better choice when free and simple wins. Choose it if you need:

  • Free surveys with up to 500,000 responses each
  • Quizzes with answer keys and automatic grading
  • Google Sheets, with Apps Script for automation

The tradeoffs: limited design, branching through sections, and no research analysis beyond summary charts and Sheets.

When trulyform is worth a look

trulyform is for short surveys your customers see, such as NPS, feedback, and intake, when you want them to finish. Look at it if you want:

  • One question at a time, with your theme, colors, and typeface
  • Logic on any answer and calculations for scores
  • Google Sheets, HubSpot, Slack, and more on every plan
  • Your whole team on every plan, Free included

What trulyform doesn’t do: research analysis, graded quizzes, payments, or free volume on Google’s scale.
